The Thirty Year War

Battle Of The Breitenfeld

September 17, 1631

It took a year and three months to the desicive battle since Hustav Arnold had disembarked on the pommeranian shore. In average Swedish-Saxonian army numbered 39000 soldiers and 75 cannons while Emperor and the League had 36000 soldiers and 26 cannons. Thylly could but hope that Hustav Adolf's prevailing numbers were outbalanced by the quality of his troops which were of course no match for 16000 saxonians, freshly recruited. Marching from Leipzig, Thylly positioned his army on the valley heights on the right from Breitenfeld village, 2 kilometers from Loberbach stream. Swedish army crossed the stream (the moment Thylly missed with no countermeasures) and attacked. The fierce battle followed, and soon the empire troops were defeated. Seriously wounded, Thylly hardly avoided death and retreated to Galle. His captured infantry turned to the Swedish side so that the latter became even more powerful than it was before.
